LO2 Production technologies

Radio technology

There are many different pieces of technology that contribute to creating a professional piece of radio
programming. I have written about several of these blow:

1) Microphone, microphone arm and microphone processor (as well as cables)

this is perhaps the most important piece of technology to use when creating a piece of radio
programming as that it is what allows the presenter record what they are saying. A microphone
processor is a device that allows the microphones volume to be lowered or heightened. As well as this
the processor connects the microphone to a computer which allows it to be digitally manipulated as an
MP3 file.
As that presenter may be doing something else in the studio a microphone arm holds the microphone
to their face.

2) Audio desk (mixing equipment)
an audio desk is a piece of equipment use in many live radio broadcasts as that it allows for particular channels of audio to be turned up or down quickly. However it is a piece of technology which Is very large and expensive and many of the functions which It was created to accomplish have been made possible to be done on a computer which I s how most radio is made today.

3) Phone Hybrid and phone talkback system

Many radio show feature sections where the presenters will take phonically from a viewer. A Phone Hybrid allows for the call to be fed directly into the main mic of the radio show so that a listener can hear it clearly. Many of these devices come equip with echo canceling technology also which means that the calls are even easier for the listener to hear.
A phone talkback system would allow a visualisation of each call coming into the station and could the be used by somebody in order to send the correct calls to the correct show.

4) Computer:

A computer is one of the most vital pieces of technology to have when creating a modern, cost efficient radio programme as that technological convergance has allowed for many of the tasks that would usually be completed on larger, expensive pieces of equipment that serve that one purpose can now be performed of software such as Adobe Audition.
5) Studio transmitter link:

Some large stations have a studio transmitter link which allows them to send a signal to a transition station who would then be able to broadcast the audio sent to them to any in th tuning required to read it.
